SCHOLARSHIPS

School is back in full swing and, yes, it is time for studnets who are graduationg to start preparing apllications for college and university.  It can be difficult and frusrtating to do the process, but it is more frustrating to see students who could be helping themselves pay for school not get any scholarships because they DON"T apply.  One of the first steps in being successful in filling out scholarships is to;

Know Your Armoury

It's important to know what you have in the way of strengths. The majority of scholarships are still based on grades, but some administrators are starting to look for other attributes in students as well. To know what you can get from a scholarship, you have to first know what you have in the way of assets.

Do you:

  • Participate in any extracurricular activities?

  • Participate in school events?

  • Get involved in sporting events?

  • Help out in your community at all?

  • Work on student council?

  • Volunteer anywhere?

Have you ever:

  • Been in a play?

  • Worked on a farm?

  • Run for office?

  • Been on an exchange program?

  • Grown vegetables?

  • Written a play?

You get the idea. Anything that makes you different from the other students applying for scholarships is important. I recommend sitting down with your family and thinking about it. Make a list. You might even want to run through your days. Something that seems routine to you might be extraordinary to someone else.

I'd also recommend talking to your guidance counsellor about how to approach your search for scholarships. It's their job to help you get ready for post-secondary education and they're good at it.

    Bsc/BEd

I am a proud alumni of both St. Francis Xavier University and Memorial University.  I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from St. FX and received my Bachelor of Education from Memorial.  I take great pleasure in teaching math, chemistry and physics, but enjoy working with students on all subjects.  I have been teaching/tutoring for almost ten years. I spent my first year of teaching in England.  I then moved back home and spent 3 years working at PALS in Sussex. I have recently started my Masters in Resource and Special Education with hopes of expanding my teaching strategies and abilities with all age groups.

I love sports.  I am a huge Blue Jays fan and quite often will receive a dirty look from my wife for always occupying the TV to watch the Blue Jays or any other sport.  A common presence during tutoring sessions is our dogs, Juneau and Louie.  They are lovers of all people and may trick you into a belly rub.

It's great to be back involved with my home community!  Since graduating high school, I have obtained a Bachelor of Science with a major in Marine Biology and a minor in Chemistry from UNB.  I then spent a couple years doing biology work with east coast fisheries. I returned to school and graduated with a Bachelor of Education from St. Thomas University.  Once I completed my BEd, I ventured to nothern Quebec where I was a Resource and Mathematics teacher.

Now that I am home, I am doing supply work and tutoring. I have also started course work towards obtaining a Masters in Resource and Special Education.
